No More Wedges: Introducing the Polydentia myQuickmat Prime

Published on

Restoring the patient's lost natural interproximal anatomy is one of the most important challenges in dentistry today.

To ensure satisfactory restoration of an approximal surface, several criteria must be met, including an anatomically correct contour and a narrow contact area, adequate marginal adaptation, and precise positioning of the marginal ridge. Deficiencies in these areas have significant clinical implications.1

Most dental practices report that reconstructing a satisfactory proximal direct posterior restoration can be a difficult, time-consuming, and often financially unprofitable procedure.

Sectional matrix systems are the preferred option. However, they are technically delicate, which can pose a challenge for inexperienced users. Matrices are subject to deformation during placement and stabilization, as well as during the application of the restorative material.2 This can lead to undesirable and clinically significant problems in the resulting restorations.1,2

Stabilizing the material is the most important aspect. To this end, wedges, spacer rings, Teflon tape, and locking or flowable resin can be used. Wedges are the most commonly used aids for achieving both matrix stabilization and cervical sealing.3 In particular, the use of plastic wedges allows them to snap into place around the cervical curvature, but only synchronous positioning from both sides provides a better cervical fit.2

To date, there are no specific protocols for selecting the correct wedge, and the wedge is often placed automatically without much attention or time being devoted to it.

The wedge is selected visually based on the size the doctor believes to be approximately correct, and the patient often has to try on several sizes. This not only takes time but also increases the risk of tissue damage.3

As modern orthopedics continues to advance, there is a rapid influx of new products designed to improve efficiency and aesthetics.

myQuickmat Prime by Polydentia is a new sectional matrix system designed to simplify the entire restoration process and reduce chair time, while ensuring proper interdental anatomy.

The system is a prime example of uncompromising simplicity and consists of a separation ring (myRing Prime), a ring end with an integrated wedge (myTines Prime), and a molded matrix for premolars and molars (Quickmat Prime anatomical partial matrix).

The new system eliminates the need for a separate wedge step without sacrificing the wedge's important function.

A closer look at the system reveals myRing Prime, a uniquely designed sectional matrix ring with an integrated wedge at each end (myTines Prime), which facilitates the treatment of Class II posterior cavities.

The stainless steel ring is curved so that it does not interfere with the adjacent teeth. It can be opened and positioned using standard rubber dam forceps or the Polydentia myForceps.

The myRing Prime, with its reusable and autoclavable wedge-shaped (or flamingo-shaped) ends, provides efficient bilateral separation of adjacent teeth and ensures optimal cervical sealing and matrix adaptation on and between premolars and molars. Its self-regulating capability makes positioning extremely easy, as the bilateral cervical sections naturally guide insertion without the risk of misalignment. The tip’s head adjusts the matrix to ensure proper proximal curvature toward the marginal ridge. Overall, the design of the ring and tip combination prevents the ring from slipping out of the approximal area, as can happen with other rings (the wedges hold it firmly in place).

The redesign of the wedge as part of the restoration process makes the system simpler, faster, and smarter than conventional sectional matrix systems. It reduces operating time and wedge wear² without compromising performance. In short, it eliminates stress!

The system also includes the Quickmat Prime anatomical section matrices, which are rigid and easy to polish and are available in a single thickness (0.04 mm) and shape for premolars and molars. Compared to other matrices, this matrix has a more pronounced contour from cervical to occlusal, which allows for precise positioning of the contact point near the equator and a naturally curved anatomy. The upper central tab facilitates positioning of the matrix with or without myQuickmatrix forceps or forceps with an angled tip.

Polydentia's myQuickmat Prime makes no compromises when it comes to efficiency or performance: The result is a simpler and more natural restoration of the proximal anatomy.

Advantages:

- a simplified posterior tooth system that reduces the time required for placement

- Key components for the feed: a ring, a ring end with integrated wedges, and a molded die (no separate wedge required)

- Self-centering wedge-shaped ends: facilitate natural insertion and ensure effective bilateral separation of adjacent teeth with optimal matrix fit and cervical seal

- Ring stability: prevents the ring from slipping off

- A matrix shaped from the cervical to the occlusal region allows for precise positioning of the contact point near the equator

- No compromises on efficiency and performance: The result is a simpler, more natural restoration of the proximal anatomy

"The myQuickmat Prime is a revolutionary concept that not only simplifies the protocol for Class II posterior restorations but also makes the entire process easier and faster. Achieving the correct curvature of the approximal contact has always been a challenge in Class II restorations, but with the combination of the new Quickmat Prime and myRing Prime, it has never been easier or more convenient. In short, a real breakthrough for my Class II restorations." Dr. Javier Tapia

myRing Prime is easy to position, even if the patient has perineal clamps or misaligned teeth.

The optimal restoration can be achieved by using myRing Prime with the anatomical Quickmat Prime partial matrices. However, all other Polydentia cutting matrices can be used with myRing Prime, and the anatomical Quickmat Prime cutting matrices can be used with other cutting matrix rings (myRing Forte, myRing Classico).

The product will be available through the Polydentia dealer network starting in June 2025.

The system is available as a kit and as refill packs (rings, ends, matrices). What’s new about this product is that the kit comes in a new luxury box from Polydentia with reusable trays that hold the components so they’re always within reach. The box and trays are sized to fit securely in cabinet drawers and are made of recyclable and cleanable materials.
