90 Years of remanium®—From Analog to Digital… A Brand Makes History
Published on
Dentaurum’s product line has undergone many changes throughout the company’s long history since its founding in 1886. Few dental products have managed to maintain a successful market presence over decades, let alone shape the current landscape. remanium® is, however, a brand that has continuously evolved and, thanks to consistent innovation, reflects the technical progress of dental technology. In 2025, remanium® will celebrate its 90th anniversary, and we can proudly say that remanium® alloys are among the best-known dental products in the field of dental technology and can look back on a long history.
The Remanit cobalt-chromium alloy for cast restorations, introduced in 1935, already possessed fundamental properties and alloy components that are still found today in high-quality cast restoration alloys under the name remanium ® (since 1964). Sintered alloys have been used in German dental laboratories since 1962. From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, the first burn-out alloys that no longer contained any precious metals became available.
Since the early 1980s, cobalt-chromium investment casting alloys have been modified so that they could be used as alloys for crowns, bridges, and fusing-on restorations. One example of this advancement is the Remanium® CD alloy, which Dentaurum began producing in 1982 using the new vacuum melting and casting system in its investment casting facility. The melting plant was expanded in 1985, enabling the start of continuous casting under vacuum and in an inert gas atmosphere. In particular, the new non-precious metal CoCr alloys for fixed dental prostheses met with great interest among dental professionals, but also with some fierce resistance.
In 2000, the Remanium® GM 900 cast alloy represented an innovative breakthrough in dental technology, as this titanium- and carbon-free cast alloy was characterized by particularly good laser weldability. Production of the crown and bridge alloys was converted to continuous casting in 2003. That same year, remanium® star—a CoCr alloy with exceptionally low hardness—was added to the alloy lineup. In 2005, remanium® secura, a CoCr alloy that is particularly easy and safe to work with, was introduced. Also in 2005, Dentaurum added remanium® LFC to its product line—an alloy whose thermal expansion properties matched those of high-gold-content “bioalloys” and which could be veneered with the same specialty ceramics.
Dentaurum’s precious-metal-free remanium® dental casting alloys have been a hallmark of quality in prosthodontics for many decades and are in use in millions of applications. To enable new technologies to achieve optimal results while working with clinically proven alloys, the remanium® star CoCr casting alloy—which has a long history of clinical success—is now available in the same high quality for three techniques: In addition to the well-known casting cylinders for dental investment casting, milled blanks for machining have been available since 2008, and micro-powder for the LMF (Laser Metal Fusion) technique has been available since 2010.
Premium-quality milling discs have been available since 2013. remanium® star MD II is characterized by a homogeneous composition that provides very high strength and exceptionally high ductility. These properties are particularly advantageous in implant technology.
In order to expand the development and manufacture of products for digital manufacturing to include related services, the Digital Technologies department was established in 2016. Specialists hired specifically for this purpose brought the necessary expertise in this rapidly growing, cutting-edge field to the company. The result today is a digital support team with comprehensive digital know-how that designs ideal materials for use in digital dental technology.
Metallic prosthetic materials, particularly non-precious metal CoCr alloys, will continue to be key pillars of prosthetic design in the future. At Dentaurum, we believe that proven materials for the fabrication of dental crown and bridge frameworks are the key to high-quality dental restorations and high patient satisfaction. Dentaurum is therefore continuously engaged in development, production, and quality assurance to ensure that the well-known and proven high quality of remanium® alloys is maintained.
At the IDS, ZT François Hartmann will speak on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Dentaurum booth (D010/E019) in Hall 10.1 about CoCr and titanium materials, including an overview of the manufacturing steps, and will discuss key material properties of remanium® and rematitan®.
