Bionic Hair & evo Family. Setting new standards in all-ceramic restorations
Published on
For several months now, our new evo brushes with Bionic-Hair have been impressing dental technicians around the world. What’s the story behind this revolutionary brush hair, why did we at Renfert embark on this development journey, and how are we now setting new standards with Bionic-Hair?
We spoke with Cim Özyurt (Product Manager) about this.
For more than four decades, Renfert has been developing high-quality dental brushes for ceramic layering. The introduction of Bionic-Hair is another milestone that has emerged from our pursuit of improved materials and technologies.
The newly developed fiber material is based on our many years of experience in brush technology and is the result of intensive research and development. “High-quality natural-hair brushes are ideally suited for dental applications due to their characteristics. The combination of fineness, durability, and moisture management—thanks to the scaly surface of the hair—makes them superior to previous alternatives. However, quality is subject to increasingly significant fluctuations, and the availability of the raw material is declining.”
Bionic-Hair combines the positive characteristics of natural and synthetic hair brushes while overcoming their drawbacks. The material is characterized by exceptional elasticity and remarkable durability, showing no fraying or kinking even with intensive use. These properties make Bionic-Hair particularly well-suited for precise and demanding dental applications, such as layering ceramic. “Another key aspect in the development of Bionic-Hair was the responsible use of resources and animal welfare,” says Cim Özyurt.
Renfert has created a material that not only impresses with its performance but also reflects a commitment to the environment and animal welfare. Bionic Hair eliminates the risk of import bans and quality fluctuations associated with natural hair, thereby contributing to a more reliable and ethical supply chain.
"With Bionic-Hair, we offer more than just an alternative—Bionic-Hair is the solution."
Currently, three of our brush models are available with Bionic Hair: our “evo” edition from lay:art evo, Genius evo, and Kolinsky evo.
In an in-depth interview (published in *dental dialogue*, 05/2024), Cim Özyurt, product manager at Renfert, provides insights into the challenges and successes associated with the development of Bionic-Hair. He emphasizes the importance of effective moisture management and elasticity, which are hallmarks of Bionic-Hair. These factors are crucial for ensuring the performance and precision that dental technicians expect from their tools.
“Thanks to the combination of differently treated fiber filaments, Bionic-Hair absorbs moisture much like natural hair. This allows us to replicate the characteristic flame-shaped brush tip. In addition, we have developed a process that allows us to selectively place fine hairs in the brush tip. This increases the proportion of hair in that area. The result is a sturdier tip and high flexibility—even under heavy use.”
Layering with Bionic-Hair offers significant advantages. Brushes made with Bionic-Hair adapt to each ceramicist’s individual techniques and movement patterns, resulting in improved handling and higher-quality results. The molecular structure of Bionic-Hair ensures consistent quality and performance that cannot be achieved with conventional materials.
“Effective moisture management in a brush is always a key factor. In addition, precision is essential when layering ceramic. The brush needs to have high tension to apply both small and large amounts of ceramic slip in a controlled manner.”
Bionic-Hair is more than just an alternative to existing products—it is a forward-looking solution that revolutionizes the day-to-day work with ceramics. With Bionic-Hair, Renfert continues its tradition of innovation and offers dental laboratories a tool that is not only technically superior but also tailored to their needs.
