The 52nd International Orthodontic Training Conference of the ÖGKFO (Austrian Society for Orthodontics) was recently held in Kitzbühel. Once again, a varied program was designed: the topics ranged from "Aligners in early mixed dentition" to "Dental sleep medicine". One of the congress highlights was the presentation of the Hans-Peter Bantleon Award. As in previous years, Dentaurum donated the prize money for first place in this prestigious scientific award. Temporarily inserted mini-implants are now often an integral part of complex orthodontic treatments. Digital planning combines clinical predictability with increased safety for the surrounding tissue. The transfer accuracy of the templates used is of crucial importance here. In a study, Dr. Alexander Schwärzler from Vienna and his colleagues Björn Ludwig, Patrick Chitan, Stefan Lettner, Benedikt Sagl and Erwin Jonke compared the transfer accuracy of 3D-printed surgical guides with that of CAD/CAM-milled guides for TADs (Temporary Anchorage Devices) for the first time. With their study on this topic, the research group was able to secure first place. A total of 60 palatal TADs were inserted into typodontic teeth, half of them using 3D-printed surgical guides and the other half using CAD/CAM-manufactured guides. The virtual target position was compared with the actual position and analyzed using micro-CT imaging. No significant differences were found between the two groups. Both showed significant deviations in vertical TAD positioning - however, the CAD/CAM milled guides provided comparable spatial and angular accuracy to the 3D printed guides and are therefore in no way inferior to the current "gold standard". Matthias Kühner and Sebastian Pavlovic congratulated Dr. Schwärzler on behalf of the Dentaurum management following his presentation of the findings. Together with the President of the ÖGKFO, Prof. Dr. Adriano Crismani, they presented him with the award and the prize money of 3,000 euros. The Hans-Peter Bantleon Prize is awarded by a board of trustees of the ÖGFKO in order to recognize and promote researchers in orthodontics. Interested parties can apply now for the next award, which will be presented in March 2025. All orthodontists practicing in Austria are eligible to participate.
